Perinatal & Postpartum Therapy in New York for More Than the Baby Blues

Pregnancy and new parenthood are supposed to be joyful — and for many people they are also overwhelming, isolating, anxious, or quietly devastating in ways no one prepared them for. Struggling does not mean you are doing it wrong or that you do not love your baby.

Peace Love Wellness offers perinatal and postpartum therapy for the enormous transition of becoming a parent — the anxiety, the depression, the identity shift, and the feelings that are hard to say out loud.

You may be here because

  • You are pregnant or recently had a baby and feel anxious, low, or not like yourself in a way that is more than the baby blues
  • Intrusive or scary thoughts about the baby have shown up, and they frighten and shame you
  • You feel like you have lost yourself in the role of parent, and you are not sure who you are now
  • Everyone is focused on the baby, and it seems like no one is checking on you
  • You are navigating pregnancy loss, fertility struggles, a difficult birth, or feeding challenges that left a mark

Perinatal and postpartum struggles are common, real, and treatable — and reaching out is not a sign that you are failing. It is one of the most caring things you can do, for yourself and for your family.

What perinatal & postpartum therapy can help with

  • Postpartum depression, anxiety, and intrusive thoughts that go beyond the baby blues
  • The identity shift of becoming a parent — matrescence — and grieving your old life even as you love your new one
  • Rage, resentment, guilt, and other feelings that are hard to admit
  • Birth trauma, a difficult delivery, NICU experiences, or feeding struggles
  • Pregnancy loss, fertility challenges, and the grief that often goes unspoken
  • Relationship strain, isolation, and a mental load that lands unevenly

More than the baby blues

The baby blues — a couple of weeks of weepiness and overwhelm — are common and usually pass. But when low mood, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or a sense of disconnection last longer or feel more intense, that is something more, and it deserves real support.

Perinatal mood and anxiety conditions are among the most common complications of pregnancy and the postpartum period. They are also highly treatable. Struggling is not a reflection of your love for your child or your worth as a parent.

Scary intrusive thoughts, in particular, are far more common than people realize and rarely mean what you fear they mean. Naming them with someone who understands is often a profound relief.

Space that is about you

So much of pregnancy and new parenthood is about the baby. Therapy is a place that is about you — your experience, your feelings, your identity, your needs — without guilt for taking the focus.

We hold the whole picture: the love and the loss, the joy and the depletion, the version of yourself you are grieving and the one you are becoming.

Perinatal & postpartum therapy FAQ

Questions we hear from new and expecting parents considering therapy at Peace Love Wellness.

What is the difference between the baby blues and postpartum depression?

The baby blues are very common, usually start within days of birth, and tend to lift on their own within about two weeks. Postpartum depression and anxiety are more intense, last longer, and interfere more with daily life — persistent low mood, anxiety, irritability, intrusive thoughts, or feeling disconnected from your baby or yourself. If what you are feeling has lasted beyond a couple of weeks or feels overwhelming, it is worth talking to someone.

I'm having scary thoughts about my baby. Should I be worried?

Unwanted, intrusive thoughts about something happening to your baby are extremely common in the postpartum period and are usually a form of anxiety, not a sign that you would act on them or that you are a danger. Naming them with a therapist is often a huge relief. That said, if your thoughts ever feel like urges you are afraid of acting on, or you have thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, please seek urgent help right away — call or text 988, or go to your nearest emergency room.

Can I come during pregnancy, or only after the baby arrives?

Both. Perinatal care covers pregnancy as well as the postpartum period. Anxiety, depression, prior loss, fear about birth, and the identity changes of pregnancy are all things therapy can support before the baby arrives, not only after.

Do you support pregnancy loss and fertility struggles?

Yes. Miscarriage, stillbirth, infertility, and the grief and strain that come with them are real losses that often go unacknowledged. We hold space for them here, and our grief therapy can be part of that support as well.

Do you accept insurance for perinatal therapy in New York?

Many clients use insurance for therapy at Peace Love Wellness. We commonly work with Aetna, Cigna, United HealthCare, Anthem, NYSHIP, MagnaCare, Carelon, and other plans. Coverage varies by plan and clinician, and we help clarify your options before you begin.

You deserve to be taken care of too
